‘Please, skip my room…’
Save on laundry costs, water and even CO2!
In the summer of 2021, heavy weather damaged the monumental forest on the Zuylestein Estate in Leersum. Forests are essential for keeping our climate livable. Thanks to Hotels for Trees – of which Blycolin is a founding partner – the first step has now been taken towards the recovery of this forest. In February 2023, the first 500 of a total of 11,500 trees have been planted.
At Blycolin, sustainability and the climate have been top of mind for years. This is because we know the impact of textile especially is very significant. We have a key position when making the production, laundry and recycling of textile more sustainable. Also improvement of the working conditions within the chain is important. To decrease the impact of textile, it is important to work on sustainability on all fronts together. One of the ways in which we make operations more sustainable is through Hotels for Trees.
Skip cleaning
The concept of Hotels for Trees is simple. Hotel rooms are cleaned daily. However, during several day stays it is not necessary to clean every day. With a special door hanger, guests can indicate that their room does not have to be cleaned that particular day. That immediately saves on laundry costs, but also other costs. Those costs are partially used to plant one tree. Every skipped cleaning therefore amounts to one new tree. This way, through the almost 150 connected hotels, more than 100,000 extra trees have been planted in various countries since 2021.
The concept is as simple as it is effective. Hotel guests can see their own impact on the initiative’s website. For every connected hotel, the number of trees planted per day can be viewed. So, if you take a quick look after your hotel stay, you can see the impact of your own actions. Hotels for Trees fights wastage and aims for improvement. Once planted, a tree can have a beneficial effect for us all for decades.
Zuylestein Estate
The first 500 of ultimately about 11,500 trees have now been planted at the Zuylestein Estate. But even then, the damage is not completely restored. Monumental forests are irreplaceable, both in their value for nature and the environment as well as the scenery. Monumental forests can only remain if we continually strive to plant new trees and protect these. After all, even the oldest tree once started as a small young tree. With Hotels for Trees, we aim to reduce waste in the industry and provide future generations with their own monumental forests. One of the most precious gifts imaginable.
